How to connect Gemini AI to ONLYOFFICE editors

Step 1. Obtain an API key

To begin, you need to obtain an API key from Google. Visit the Google AI Studio. Navigate to the API keys section, and generate a new API key. This key will be required to connect Gemini AI to ONLYOFFICE.

Step 2. Install and configure the AI plugin

Once you have the API key, open ONLYOFFICE editors and go to the Plugins tab. Click on Plugin Manager and find the AI plugin. Install it and wait for the process to complete.

After installation, close the Plugin Manager and enable the plugin by clicking Background Plugins in the Plugins tab. The AI tab will now appear in the toolbar, allowing access to AI functionalities.

Step 3. Connect Gemini AI models

Navigate to the AI tab and open Settings. Select Edit AI models and click +.

In the Provider name drop-down menu, choose Google-Gemini. Enter the API key you obtained earlier and click Update models list.

A list of available Gemini models will appear, including options like Gemini 1.5 Pro. Choose the model that best fits your needs.

Below, choose what the model can be used for: text, images, embeddings, audio processing, content moderation, real-time tasks, coding help, and visual analysis.

Once the parameters are set. Click OK.

Step 4. Assign tasks to Gemini AI models

Then, go back to the AI configuration. From the drop-down list, select the installed AI models that will perform these tasks such as text processing, summarization, or code generation, and save the settings.

The model is now connected and ready for use in ONLYOFFICE editors.

How to use Gemini AI in ONLYOFFICE editors

After successfully connecting Gemini AI, you can start using its features within ONLYOFFICE. Access AI tools by opening the AI tab or right-clicking selected text to view AI-powered options. Use Gemini AI to generate high-quality text, articles, or reports, summarize and translate content instantly, and receive AI-driven code suggestions if you are a developer.

Let’s say you’ve got a long article or report and want to create a concise summary. Highlight the section of the document you want to summarize. If you want to summarize the entire document, simply select all the text.

Use the Summarization button in the AI tab. Then choose a language and click Summarize. Once the text appears, you can correct it. Then, choose how to insert the summarization into your document: as a comment, below the text, replace the selected text, etc.
