How to connect Qwen to ONLYOFFICE editors

1. Get Tongyi Qianwen credentials

• First, obtain a base_url from Alibaba Cloud documentation.

• Then, sign up or log in to Alibaba Bailian Platform to get the API key for Qwen. Upon registration, you will receive 1 million tokens for each function and 5 million tokens for translation, valid for 180 days for free.

2. Install and set up the AI plugin

• Open ONLYOFFICE editors and go to the Plugins tab.
• Click Plugin Manager and find the AI plugin. Click Install.

• Once installed, click the Background Plugins button in the Plugins tab and activate the AI function. The AI tab will appear in the upper toolbar.

3. Connect Tongyi Qianwen

• Go to the new AI tab in the toolbar and open Settings.

• Click Edit AI models, then click the + button.

• Enter a provider name, then paste your base_url and API key.
• Click Update models list — the plugin will fetch available models.

• Select the model you need and assign tasks such as text processing, content moderation, or coding assistance.

• Click OK to save and finish setup. The model will appear in the list of available models in the AI models list.

The ONLYOFFICE plugin supports multiple AI models simultaneously. You can connect other Qwen models and assign each of them for different tasks.

Our experience with Qwen

We tried translating this article into Chinese using the qwen-vl-max model with just one click from the context menu. The result was clear and accurate: the AI handled complex sentences well and kept the meaning intact.

The only thing we noticed was that the tone felt a bit too formal and structured — great for technical content, but for marketing, it could use some tweaking. To improve this, we used the Ask AI feature and added a more specific prompt asking for a more natural and engaging tone. With this adjustment, Qwen delivered a better result, making the translation sound more suitable for our blog.
