The 2024 Summer Olympics: general information
The Summer Olympics is an international multi-sport event, and its 33rd edition is scheduled to take place from 26 July to 11 August 2024 in the capital city of France, Paris. Best athletes from more than 200 countries all over the world will do their best to take the first place in 32 sports. During 16 days of the Games, there will be 329 medal events.
The opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics is taking place on 26 July 2024 in Paris and will include an artistic program, the parade of athletes and the traditional lighting of the Olympic cauldron.
The closing ceremony is scheduled to take place on 11 August at the famous Stade de France, where athletes from all over the world will have the last chance to represent their countries and celebrate the end of the current Olympic cycle.
The official mascot is called Olympic Phryge. It resembles the traditional small Phrygian hats. The mascot’s design is a symbol of freedom representing allegorical figures of the French Republic.
Official venues
Most of the scheduled events are being held in Paris and its metropolitan region, but some competitions are taking place in other French cities:
- Basketball and handball matches will be held in Lille;
- Sailing and some football games will take place in Marseille;
- Football matches will also be held in Bordeaux, Lyon (the Décines-Charpieu commune), Nantes, Nice and Saint-Étienne.
Tahiti, an island in the overseas territory of French Polynesia, will host the surfing events.
